What Is Membrane Waterproofing?

Method of Statement: Membrane Waterproofing in UAE
Horizontal Membrane Waterproofing UAE:
Application of Primer:
- Prior to membrane installation, the binding concrete surface shall be prepared and cleaned.
- A primer recommended by the manufacturer of the membrane shall be applied to the cleaned surface.
- The applied primer shall be inspected by the engineer 24 hours after placement.
Membrane Installation:
- One or two layers of 4mm thick modified bituminous waterproofing membrane shall be installed horizontally.
- The membrane shall be fully torched to the primed concrete surface.
- A minimum of 100mm end laps and 150mm side laps shall be maintained during installation.
- The membrane shall be bonded using a cylinder-fed propane gas torch.
- A trowel shall be used to seal the seams of the membrane, ensuring a watertight seal.
- A knife shall be used for cutting the membrane as needed.
- The membrane shall be positioned correctly and then re-rolled for approximately half of its length without changing its orientation.
- After unrolling, the membrane shall be torched, pressing the melted area against the substrate.
- This process shall be repeated until the entire length of the membrane is firmly bonded to the surface.
- The second membrane layer, if required, shall be installed in the same manner, with a 150mm overlap at the end and a 100mm overlap at the side.
- An additional length of a minimum of 1 meter of the horizontal membrane shall extend vertically to maintain continuity and protection.
Vertical Membrane Waterproofing in UAE:
Application of Primer:
- The concrete surface of grouted shoring or blockwork walls shall be prepared and cleaned.
- A primer recommended by the membrane manufacturer shall be applied to the cleaned surface..
- The applied primer shall be inspected by the engineer 24 hours after placement.
Membrane Installation:
- One or two layers of 4mm thick modified bituminous waterproofing membrane shall be applied to all vertical surfaces of the grouted shoring or blockwork wall.
- Before membrane application, ensure that the concrete surface is properly primed.
- The continuity of the membrane shall be maintained by providing a minimuThe extra portion (minimum of 300mm) of the horizontal membrane shall be turned up and wrapped onto the vertical primed surfaces.
- The membrane on the exposed external vertical surface shall extend a minimum of 150mm above the finished ground level (e.g., side wall, parapet, etc.) and shall be securely tucked into a continuous groove provided for this purpose.
- The membrane shall be firmly secured using an approved sealant/mastic recommended by the manufacturer.
Protection:
- The membrane fixed on the grouted or concrete wall shall be protected from any damage caused by rebar fixing, formworks, concreting of the raft, or retaining wall works.
- An approved type of protection board shall be fixed to the membrane to prevent damage.
- All areas of the membrane exposed above the ground shall be protected with appropriate flashing.
Safety:
- Safety precautions shall be strictly followed throughout the membrane waterproofing process.
- All personnel involved in the installation shall wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
